SYNOPSIS: Cute and Likable “Sylvie” is a free spirited, somewhat neurotic model living in Munich, Germany. She loves hot dogs, champagne and smoking cigars. Sylvie bounces from one man to the next but surprises herself by falling for simple taxi driver “Paul”, a sailor working as a driver until his next ship comes in. He’s a little dopey but a good guy who lives with his overprotective mother. Sylvie has to fly to NYC for a job and meets a wild fashion photographer. He likes to go out onto the streets of Manhattan and shoot ‘guerilla’ style (much like Lemke’s film crew did, I imagine). One scene has them on 42nd Street with lots of Deuce theater marquees in the background (Danger: Diabolik, Samson and the 7 Miracles, Theatre of Blood, etc). All the background “extras” watching and laughing are clearly real people. Later, there’s an amazing shot from a helicopter circling the World Trade Center circa 1973 with Sylvie on the roof running around doing a photoshoot. They also ride in old subway cars covered with graffiti. Back in Munich she finds Paul and hires him to drive her to an overnight job. She continues to fall in love with him and has to figure out how to prevent him from leaving before his next ship comes in (so to speak). Filled with drama, humor and romance with a documentary look and feel. It’s hard to believe such an evenhanded and frank film about a modern woman was directed by a man (for television no less). Director Lemke does a great job. It would fit well in a triple feature with A Woman Under the Influence and Wanda. Another J4HI offering with zero reviews on the IMDB. Highly recommended. In German and English language with English subtitles.
