The Flesh of the Orchid (La Chair de L'orchidée) (1975)
DIRECTOR: Patrice Chéreau (Queen Margot)
STARS: Charlotte Rampling (The Night Porter), Bruno Cremer (Sorcerer, Without Warning), Simone Signoret (Diabolique), Edwige Feuillere, Hans Christian Blech (The Longest Day)
SYNOPSIS: Dark drama with thriller elements starring Charlotte Rampling, who looks amazing. The underrated French star Bruno Cremer is in some hot water over money that he owes. Adding to his problems is a friend who turns up on the run from two brothers who are hitmen. These guys used to be knife throwers in a traveling carnival! Cremer decides to hit the road with his pal and they meet up with Rampling. She’s just escaped a home for the mentally disturbed and has a bad habit of stabbing people (assailants) in the eye. She connects with Cremer and they continue their road trip running from both the assassins as well as Rampling’s mean aunt who wants to control her niece’s large inheritance. Along the way Rampling is kidnapped and watched over by kindly Simone Signoret in an old movie theater. There’s violence, nudity and action throughout the story. All the actors are first rate with Hans Christian Blech standing out as one of the world weary hitmen. It’s a great looking film with memorable cinematography and locations, decaying estates, a closed movie palace and French countrysides. It always seems to be overcast, foggy and damp with a bit of film noir quality to it. In French language with English subtitles. WIDESCREEN
