DUNCAN'S WORLD
(1977)
DIRECTOR: John Clayton (Redneck Miller)
STARS: Larry Tobias, Don Morrill
SYNOPSIS: Animal lover Duncan investigates a mystery in his hometown in this forgotten kid's film. I'm always intrigued by rural productions with a cast of actors who rarely went on to do anything else. This may not be everyone's cup of tea but I appreciate how the amateur casts of teens are pretty realistic. They look and act like real 70's teens, not Hollywood ones. Some of them are odd-looking, gawky and have heavy accents. It reminds me of films like My Bodyguard or Breaking Away which had a similar authentic feel to them. At any rate, this one is like those classroom films from the 70's and 80's that were simple slices-of-life stories, as opposed to an anti-drug film or safety film with a heavy message. Our hero Duncan is in charge of caring for and feeding animals at his father's Nature Museum. One night a large explosion in a nearby lake kills a duck. He then spends the rest of the film trying to find out who was responsible. He also gets into a dirt bomb war with some friends and has to deal with some older bullies. He's sort of a nature-based "Encyclopedia Brown" explaining weird facts about animals, fish and insects to anyone who's interested. He also has a raccoon and snake as pets and wears a Tiki necklace for good luck. Shot in North Carolina. Zero reviews on the IMDB for this one!
