The Lost Man (1969)
DIRECTOR: Robert Allen Aurthur
STARS: Sidney Poitier (Defiant Ones), Joanna Shimkus (The Virgin and the Gypsy), Al Freeman Jr. (Malcolm X), Michael Tolan (All that Jazz), Richard Dysart (The Thing), David Steinberg, Paul Winfield (High Velocity), Bernie Hamilton (Bucktown), Dick Anthony Williams (Edward Scissorhands), Vonetta McGee (Blacula)
SYNOPSIS: This film is an American remake of the British classic Odd Man Out (1947) which starred James Mason. The story has been brought up to modern day (1969) Philadelphia and Sidney Poitier takes over the lead role. He plays the leader of a revolutionary black movement who once taught peace and civility. But after years of being beaten and thrown in jail - he’s changed his tune. He concocts a plan for a big money heist. The funds will go to the families of his brothers-in-arms who are serving long prison sentences. After the main set-up and heist sequence the bulk of the film is Poitier trying to get out of the city in one piece. The police have bridges, tunnels and roads in the area locked up. Not to mention Poitier has a bullet in his arm that’s slowing him down. It’s nice to see Poitier playing a character who is both smart and a tough guy with some edge to his performance. The film is packed with familiar black actors of the era who would go on to appear in many blaxploitation classics. Pretty Canadian actress Joanna Shimkus plays a privileged white woman who helps, and falls in love with, Poitier. Quincy Jones provides the score.
