The Hostage Tower (1980)
DIRECTOR: Claudio Guzmán (Linda Lovelace for President)
STARS: Peter Fonda, Maud Adams (Tattoo), Billy Dee Williams (Deadly Illusion), Keir Dullea (Welcome to Blood City), Britt Ekland (The Ultimate Thrill), Douglas Fairbanks Jr. (Ghost Story), Celia Johnson (Brief Encounter)
SYNOPSIS: Based on a book by Alistair MacLean (Ice Station Zebra, When Eight Bells Toll, Bear Island, etc). Top billed Peter Fonda (weapons expert) is recruited along with Billy Dee Williams (thief) and Maud Adams (cat burglar) for a complicated heist. Behind the scheme is filthy rich criminal Keir Dullea. He tells his girlfriend (Ekland) he’s addicted to money and crime. The plot involves holding not a person but an object as hostage. In this case the film’s title refers to the Eiffel Tower which is overtaken by Dullea’s crew and loaded with explosives. If the ransom isn’t paid they will detonate the bombs and turn the landmark into a pile of twisted metal. On the ground, government man Douglas Fairbanks Jr tries to get ahead of the criminals and thwart their plans. His secret weapon is a few undercover agents who have infiltrated Dullea’s group making it feel a little like Die Hard. This is a made-for-TV movie so don’t expect too much in the way of productions values. However... it is very impressive that the filmmakers were able to shoot on the actual Eiffel Tower and not a film set. At one point Fonda even rappels off the damn thing. A fun 70’s thriller never released on dvd. From the director of Linda Lovelace for President (!)
