Indian Summer (La Prima Notte di Quiete) (1972)

$20.00

DIRECTOR: Valerio Zurlini (Violent Summer)

STARS: Alain Delon (Le Samourai, Purple Noon), Giancarlo Giannini (Seven Beauties, Rita the Mosquito), Sonia Petrovna, Renato Salvatori (Live Like a Cop - Die Like a Man), Alida Valli (Suspiria)

SYNOPSIS: Alain Delon stars as a substitute literature teacher in a small modern day (1972) Italian town called Rimini. The other teachers (including Gianinni and Salvatori) welcome him and invite him out after hours. In the little town there’s not too much to do so they gather at parties and clubs to drink and screw. It seems like everyone has already slept with each other at one point or another. But Delon is more reserved and serious. He walks through life with a heavy burden on his shoulders as if he’s haunted by his past. At home he lives with his wife in a loveless marriage. But one student in his class, “Vanina” (Petrovna), catches his eye. Not only because she’s gorgeous but also because he sees potential in her. They tentatively spend time together and soon fall in love. This becomes a tricky situation since she has a super rich, somewhat unstable, boyfriend. Things eventually come to a head with the boyfriend, Vanina, Delon and his coworkers. The film does a great job of capturing the desolate seaside town. The exteriors are always overcast in dark blues and grays and the interiors look like a Neo Noir. Alida Valli plays Vanina’s mother and she absolutely rips into Delon in one memorable scene. Delon is excellent in a very intense and low key performance which in later years he claimed was his best work. In French language with English subtitles. WIDESCREEN
