An Average Little Man (Un Borghese Piccolo Piccolo) (1977)
DIRECTOR: Mario Monicelli (Big Deal on Madonna Street, Amici Miei)
STARS: Alberto Sordi (Mafioso), Shelley Winters (Night of the Hunter), Vincenzo Crocitti (To Be Twenty)
SYNOPSIS: Legendary Italian comedic actor Alberto Sordi switches things up in this surprising drama. He’s a proud man who has worked as an accountant for decades. Getting close to retirement he’s eager to have his only son follow in his professional footsteps. Sordi is absolutely dedicated to his son who is sweet and kind but also a little slow. This is an issue since applicants must take a difficult test to get a government accounting job. Sordi jumps through many hoops and pulls strings to help his boy out. And then…. (I don’t want to give too much away) it turns into a revenge thriller. No laughs, no comedy - a revenge thriller! The rest of the film has Sordi playing amateur detective and torturer. I imagine fans of Sordi’s silly comedies were blindsided by the events that unfold. Shelley Winters plays Sordi’s wife. An unpredictable arthouse entry with fine performances and great cinematography. In Italian language with English subtitles. WIDESCREEN
