I, The Executioner (Minagoroshi no Reika) (1968)

$20.00

(aka Requiem for a Massacre)

DIRECTOR: Tai Katô (The Blossom and the Sword)

STARS: Makoto Satô (The Hidden Fortress), Chieko Baishô, Sanae Nakahara (Lady Snowblood)

SYNOPSIS: In the shocking cold opening a nude prostitute is tied up, brutally beaten, raped and killed. Before she dies she writes a list of names on a paper at his request. We see the man responsible but he’s not a serial killer or psycho. His motives remain a mystery until the end… but we soon learn his killing spree is based on some kind of revenge rather than evil motives. We follow our “hero” as he goes from sex worker on the list to the next. He finds time to fall for a young girl who works as a server in a local restaurant and a bit of love interest appears. Meanwhile two detectives on the case are slowly closing in. Although there’s a bit of humor, mostly with the police, this is pretty dark stuff with leading man Satô bringing a world weary bleakness to his role. The black and white widescreen photography looks great. In Japanese language with English subtitles. WIDESCREEN
