(aka Far East Shadow Society)
DIRECTOR: Shôkaku Baba
STARS: Kōji Yakusho (Shall We Dance?, Perfect Day), Sho Kosugi (Revenge of the Ninja), Jimmy Wang Yu (One-Armed Boxer)
SYNOPSIS: This Asian crime film has a lot of moving parts. The main charatcters are two low level criminals (including Kōji Yakusho) who smuggle cocaine into Tokyo, Italian mob figures who want to control the drug world, a Japanese undercover agent (Sho Kosugi), local Triad gangs, crooked cops, and more. The plot bounces back and forth between all these characters who often cross paths with each other. This film certainly owes a lot to all the influential John Woo films that came out before it including Hard-Boiled just one year prior. Tone-wise there are hyper-violent action scenes, nice Wong Kar-Wai style neon soaked shots, and some down and dirty exploitation moments as well. The film has nudity, torture sequences, wild shoot-outs and explosions. It’s great to see kung fu OG Jimmy Wang Yu as a sadistic gang leader as well as everyone’s favorite 1980’s ninja Sho Kosugi as an undercover agent. You might be surprised to see leading man Kōji Yakusho playing a world weary drug smuggler since most viewers will remember him playing shy characters in films like Shall We Dance and Wim Wender’s Perfect Day. Zero reviews on the IMDB for this one! In Chinese & Japanese language with English subtitles. WIDESCREEN
