Deadhead Miles (1972)

$20.00

DIRECTOR: Vernon Zimmerman (Unholy Rollers, Fade to Black)

STARS: Alan Arkin (The In-Laws, Chu Chu & The Philly Flash), Paul Benedict (Taking Off), Donna Anderson (Count Yorga, Vampire), Bruce Bennett (Mildred Pierce), Madison Arnold, Oliver Clark, Charles Durning, Hector Elizando

SYNOPSIS: The poster art (above) is pretty misleading as it makes the film look like an old exploitation movie from the 50’s. Instead, it takes place in modern day (1972) with a quirky truck driver, “Cooper” (Alan Arkin), working with his criminal pals to steal a big rig full of goods. Arkin decides to ditch his partners and head off on his own, driving cross country to sell the stolen merchandise. He meets various characters along the way including a hitchhiker (Paul Benedict). The two men seem to get along fairly well with Benedict happily helping out Arkin as he scams and steals along the way. It’s an entertaining road movie with plenty of unexpected moments. Alan Arkin’s performance is weird (and hilarious) and the voice he’s using is like something out of a cartoon. His character is so hard for anyone to get along with and even though he’s not violent, he’ll steal the shirt off your back if he can. In one scene, after being pulled over by the police, he tells Benedict: “You’re gonna see a man step in a bucket of shit and come out with clean shoe!” It’s surprising to see Bruce Bennett, a star of the 40’s and 50’s in films like Mildred Pierce, as a mysterious old trucker who may be a ghost! The script was co-written by Terrence Malick (Badlands, Thin Red Line). Look fast for Richard Kiel (Moonraker) sitting in a bar. Recommended - this is a cult film waiting to be rediscovered!
