Chu Chu and the Philly Flash (1981)

$20.00

DIRECTOR: David Lowell Rich (Northeast of Seoul, That Man Bolt)

STARS: Alan Arkin (The In-Laws), Carol Burnett (Annie), Jack Warden (Being There), Danny Aiello (Moonstruck), Adam Arkin, Danny Glover (Predator 2), Sid Haig (Spider Baby, The Woman Hunt), Vincent Schiavelli (Ghost), Ruth Buzzi (“Laugh-In”), Vito Scotti, Lou Jacobi (My Favorite Year)

SYNOPSIS: I’m always fascinated by film flops when I get a chance to see them. Some are outright awful and others nowhere near as bad as you might think. This film falls somewhere in-between. I imagine if it was a made-for-TV release, and not theatrical, people would be more forgiving. Alan Arkin is the “Philly Flash” an ex-baseball pitcher who lives on the streets and seems to be a little on the spectrum. Carol Burnett is a dance instructor / street performer who dresses up in exotic outfits as “Chu Chu”. Both are recovering alcoholics. They become wary partners when a briefcase comes into their possession containing valuable documents. At first they try to sell the briefcase back to the bad guys (including their leader, Danny Aiello) but soon realize it’s worth much more. They end up getting help from other homeless and marginalized friends (including Jack Warden, Adam Arkin, Danny Glover, Sid Haig, etc). This bittersweet comedy has lots of silly sequences, action scenes and a few dramatic moments courtesy of the the two leads. This one played all the time on cable television in the 1980’s. Shot on location in San Francisco.
