DIRECTOR: David Carradine
STARS: David Carradine (Tropical Snow, Kill Bill), Barbara Hershey (The Entity), Michael Greene (Naked Angels, To Live and Die in L.A.), Fran Ryan (Brainwash), Dan Haggerty (Grizzly Adams)
SYNOPSIS: With all the classic, good and bad, exploitation films in his career it’s easy to forget David Carradine made some great dramas like Bound for Glory, Cloud Dancer and this: Americana. He even takes the director’s chair here for the third and last time. He stars as a returning Vietnam vet wandering into a small Kansas town. A local gas station owner (Greene) befriends him and offers a job. Across the street from the station is a field with an old broken down merry-go-round. Carradine impulsively decides to repair the old carousel alone in his spare time. Locals, including a young Barbara Hershey, are curious and confused by his efforts. Despite some hardships, like teenage vandals causing damage, he presses on to fix the ride and perhaps himself. This is a small passion project from Carradine that took years to complete. The scenes with Carradine and Greene interacting are realistic and memorable. A sweet low key sleeper.
