Young Warriors (1983)
DIRECTOR: Lawrence Foldes (Don't Go Near the Park)
STARS: James Van Patten (Roller Boogie, Lunch Wagon), Lynda Day George (Beyond Evil), Linnea Quigley (Summer Camp), Richard Roundtree (Miami Cops, Getting Even), Mike Norris, Ernest Borgnine (Shoot), Anne Lockhart (Troll), Dick Shawn (Best Chest in the West, Good-Bye Cruel World)
SYNOPSIS: Here’s an 80’s “Cannon” film with a little bit of a split personality (genre-wise). The first 30 minutes or so is Animal House-stylefun and hi-jinks with James Van Patten and his frat bros playing harmless pranks, drinking, screwing and hazing new pledges. Then one night after a dance Van Patten’s kid sister is gang-raped by a sleazy bunch of creeps in a black van. She later dies in a coma. The siblings father is Ernest Borgnine, a local police detective. He and his partner, Roundtree, are investigating the crime but have no leads. Van Patten, fed up with the slow pace, decides to enlist his frat brothers to help load his jeep with a cache of guns and go criminal hunting Death Wish-style . It seems like their sleepy California town always has a robbery, kidnapping or rape happening somewhere. After acting as judge, jury and executioner the crew eventually catch up to the black van scum. The film’s ending is surprisingly downbeat. Van Patten’s character is into computer animation and there are a few funny scenes where we see his “feelings” manifested in his art projects. There’s a surprising amount of full frontal nudity to go along with the over-the-top gunfight sequences. In one scene Van Patten shoots two would-be robbers about 100 times in slo-mo. The soundtrack is 80’s synthesizer and screaming metal guitar. Linnea Quigley has a small role and, despite the poster art, does not ride on the back of a motorcycle with a gun-toting Van Patten. All in all there’s a little bit of everything in this very 80’s action / comedy / romance / drama / exploitation!
