The Snow Queen (Lumikuningatar) (1986)

$20.00

DIRECTOR: Päivi Hartzell

STARS: Satu Silva, Outi Vainionkulma, Sebastian Kaatrasalo

SYNOPSIS: A young girl has a fantastical adventure in this adaptation from Finland of Hans Christian Anderson’s The Snow Queen. Angelic “Kerttu” is a preteen girl spending days carelessly playing with her brother “Kai”. Her world is turned upside down when the evil Snow Queen kidnaps Kai and turns him into a zombie unable to exert any free will. Kertuu must go on a long quest to find him encountering dangerous characters like a lonely witch and a violent gang of rebels. Eventually she reaches the icy lair to fight the Queen and save her poor sibling. This is a great looking film with lots of naturalistic dreamy photography, locations, costumes and make-up. When Kerttu meets the gang of marauders the audience is even treated to a full blown musical number! Despite the heavy fantasy elements it all feels pretty real. As far as I could tell everything was done with practical effects. Perfectly safe to watch for the youngest of kids. Fans of films like The Fall, Valerie and Her Week of Wonders, Labyrinth and Neverending Story will appreciate this one. In Finnish language with English subtitles. WIDESCREEN
