The Marathon Family (Maratonci trce pocasni krug) (1982)
DIRECTOR: Slobodan Sijan
STARS: Bogdan Diklic, Danilo ‘Bata’ Stojkovic, Pavle Vuisic
SYNOPSIS: A very particular type of black humor runs through this entertaining 80’s Yugoslavian film. In 1934 the Marathon family has already been in the funeral business for literally decades. It’s run by the men with no women relatives in sight. There’s a son, a father, a grandfather, a great grandfather, etc. They have a relationship with a shady criminal who digs up bodies in the cemetery and then sell the coffins back to the funeral home. One family member convinces the others to buy an oven to cremate the bodies. When they first test it, with an animal carcass, it doesn’t work properly… but the cooked meat is too good to pass up for a meal! There’s a local businessman who opens a movie house in town and he’s also obsessed with making his own pornographic film. When the relationship between the Marathon family and the criminal gang goes sour it all ends in a big gun fight. At times riotously funny, fans of (late 70’s, early 80’s) Czech cinema and Emir Kusturica (Underground, Time of the Gypsies) will love this one. In Serbian language with English subtitles. WIDESCREEN
