The Gold of Love (Das Gold der Liebe) (1983)
DIRECTOR: Eckhart Schmidt (The Fan)
STARS: Alexandra Curtis, Allegra Curtis, Marie Colbin
SYNOPSIS: This film would have been custom made for “Night Flight” programming back in the late 1980’s squeezed between screenings of Breaking Glass and Liquid Sky. A young blonde woman, Patricia”, tries desperately to get into a nightclub and meet her favorite group “Gabi and Robert”. In a dark alley she sees a bloody murder. The two killers, a man and woman, will pursue her for the rest of film. Her dreamlike journey takes her to dance clubs, bars and strange apartments. There are lots of memorable images; a car POV driving through empty late night streets, blood drips from a girl’s eyes, a man shoots himself in a restaurant, etc. A variety of music is heard throughout the film similar to bands like Joy Division, Ministry, Depeche Mode, etc. In fact the soundtrack is packed with so many songs - there’s more music… than dialog! At times it feels like a long form music video from the early 80’s and it’s highly stylized dream state reminded me of films like Carnival of Souls and Cafe Flesh. Recommended. In German language with English subtitles.
