The Battle of Neretva (1969) - 2hr 23min version

$20.00

(aka Bitka na Neretvi)

DIRECTOR: Veljko Bulajic (The Day That Shook the World)

STARS: Yul Brynner (Westworld), Hardy Krüger (The Wild Geese), Franco Nero (The Falcon), Curd Jurgens (The Invincible Six, The Spy Who Loved Me), Orson Welles (The Witching), Sylvia Koscina (Judex)

SYNOPSIS: This rare title is in the tradition of epic WWII films like The Longest Day, A Bridge Too Far and Tora! Tora! Tora!. The difference here is that it focuses on a lesser know battle in former Yugoslavia. The story spends time with both the Yugo partisans and the German army. The partisans are working their way to the “Neretva” river where they will secure a vital bridge. Adding to this challenge are wounded soldiers and civilians who must make the difficult journey as well. No one can afford to be idle as men, women, the young, and the old fight the axis powers. They have limited weapons and rely on smart tactical moves to (sometimes) outsmart the Germans. There are a handful of big names in the cast but Hardy Krüger probably gets the most screen time as a clever German infantry commander, while top-billed Yul Brynner plays a no-nonsense explosives expert working for the good guys. Orson Welles appears for less than 10 minutes. It’s more action heavy than most war films with every other scene having shoot-outs, explosions, stabbings, etc. The fight scenes are absolutely epic, often with hundreds, if not thousands, of real people shooting guns, dodging bombs and charging down the battlefield - no CGI and no green screens. One of the most expensive films ever made in Yugoslavia. Originally released in a butchered 1hr 46 minute version, our copy is 37 minutes longer. Running time: 2hr 23mins. WIDESCREEN
