Supersonic Saucer (1956) / The Monster of Highgate Ponds (1961)
Double Feature on 1 DVD
DIRECTOR: Supersonic Saucer: Guy Fergusson / Monster of Highgate Ponds: Alberto Cavalcanti
STARS: Supersonic Saucer: Marcia Manolescue, Gillian Harrison, Fella Edmonds/ Monster of Highgate Ponds: Rachel Clay, Michael Wade, Terry Raven
SYNOPSIS: Two children’s fantasy films from the UK on one disc.
Supersonic Saucer: Three young children, a boy and two girls, discover a small, E.T. like space visitor and take it home. The alien is about 2 feet tall, wrapped in a white cloak with only his eyes peeking out— no nose or mouth. He communicates with the kids telepathically and can transform into a small flying saucer at will. They kids are excited to have him as their secret friend and name him “Amoeba”. When he overhears them mindlessly “wishing” for things, like baked goods or money, he turns into a saucer and travels to town to scoop up those items and bring them back. At first they’re happy but then decide the items must be returned. However, some comedic relief criminals are onto their scheme and want the stolen money for themselves. This sets up the finale of returning the money to the bank, outwitting the thieves, and getting Amoeba back to his home planet. A harmless Sci-Fi entry for the preteen set. Running time: 50mins
The Monster of Highgate Ponds: A young boy is given a huge unhatched egg from his uncle who works at a museum. He cares for the egg and surprisingly it hatches one day while he’s at school. A small dinosaur-like / Loch Ness Monster looking creature pops up and the boy and his friends protect and raise it. When it gets too big they bring it to the local pond so it can thrive. Some problems arise when a nosy busybody woman sees it as well as two zoo owners who want it for display. The kids work with the uncle to get him back to his home where he belongs. The monster is kind of fun, first seen as a stop-motion figure, then a hand puppet, and finally, a man in a rubber suit. It’s all pretty silly. Running time: 1hr
