Slaughter Night (Masacre Nocturna) (1990)
DIRECTOR: Gilberto de Anda (Policía de Narcóticos)
STARS: Mario Almada (Pandilleros, Law Fighter), Juan Peláez, Sergio Sánchez, Wanda Seux (El Macho Bionico)
SYNOPSIS: Here’s an obscure Mexican horror anthology film from the early 90’s. The first story concerns an actor playing the role of the phantom in a dinner theater version of Phantom of the Opera. He was hired for not only his acting ability but also his expertise in make-up that saves the producers lot of money. Unbeknownst to everyone he uses an ancient Evil Dead-style book filled with magic spells to literally transform his face into a hideous monster. A fellow actor, jealous of his success, learns about the sacred book and tries to use it on himself. In the second tale a gang of gun-toting thieves invade the home of a wealthy couple. The homeowners seem oddly unfazed by their threats of violence. When the couple refers to their loyal servant by his name, “Renfield”, you can guess where this one might be going. Lastly, we have Mexican film legend Mario Almada on a trip to the countryside with his bickering wife. He wants to do a little hunting and track down a hairy monster he’d seen as a child. Turns out the monster is none other than Bigfoot. Before he can kill ol’ Sasquatch, a mob of creeps carrying machetes and guns attack him and his wife - but who will Bigfoot side with? These stories remind me of George Romero’s old Tales from the Darkside TV show. Mostly PG rated stuff but the last segment has arms ripped off and a beheading. In Spanish language with English subtitles.
