Sebastian (1968)
DIRECTOR: David Greene (The People Next Door, Fatal Vision)
STARS: Dirk Bogarde (The Servant), Susannah York (A Man for All Seasons), Lilli Palmer (The House That Screamed), John Gielgud (Secret Agent), Janet Munro (The Crawling Eye), Nigel Davenport (Phase IV), Donald Sutherland (Invasion of the Body Snatchers)
SYNOPSIS: Dirk Bogarde stars as “Sebastian” the head of a British intelligence department dedicated to breaking secret codes in modern day UK (circa 1968). He has a knack for finding people who can solve puzzles and think outside the box. For some reason all his recruits are women. There’s a huge workspace with more than 40 ladies trying to find solutions to important codes. The film starts off with the newest recruit, perky Susannah York, joining the department. It’s not long before she begins to fall in love with Bogarde but he’s a tough nut to crack being an “all work and no play” kind of guy. There’s a mixture of comedy, drama and romance in this hard to categorize film. The code-cracking scenes are fun and York & Bogarde have good chemistry. Lilli Palmer is memorable as an older code-cracker who may be a double-agent. Overall the film has a very swinging (late) 60’s vibe with its fashion and music. A forgotten British film entry never released on vhs or dvd.
