Rita the Mosquito (Rita La Zanzara) 1966)
DIRECTOR: Lina Wertmüller (Swept Away)
STARS: Rita Pavone (Crazy Westerners), Giancarlo Giannini (Seven Beauties), Peppino De Filippo (Variety Lights)
SYNOPSIS: Here’s a candy-colored piece of musical comedy fluff that doesn’t seem to have screened much outside of Italy. Likable pop singer / actress Pavone looks like a cross between Emma Stone and Maisie Williams (“Arya Stark” from Game of Thrones). She plays “Rita” a precocious student at a fancy all-girl private school in Italy. Her group of friends have dubbed themselves “The Mosquitoes”. They play pranks, annoy the establishment and are obsessed with their music teacher “Paolo“ (Giannini). Early in the film Rita discovers that her nerdy befuddled teacher has a secret swinging alter-ego. He throws on a 60’s mod wig and sings rockin’ pop songs at a hip nightclub. Clearly she is smitten with this older man and begins loving, hating and stalking him. The film is really packed with music! Sure, the songs are in Italian but most are a lot of fun. Before winning awards for films like Seven Beauties and Swept Away director Wertmüller was already filling the screen with fantasy sequences, memorable set design, colorful costumes and beautiful camerawork. Like a junior version of Umbrellas of Cherbourg this film looks great. An almost 60 year old film by an award winning director and… there’s not a single review on the IMDB. In Italian language with English subtitles. WIDESCREEN
