Orion's Belt (1985)

$20.00

DIRECTOR: Ola Solum, Tristan de Vere Cole

STARS: Helge Jordal, Sverre Anker Ousdal, Hans Ola Sørlie

SYNOPSIS: Excellent cold war thriller from 1985 that deserves to be more well known. A trio of resourceful Norwegian fishermen hustle for ways to make money in the ball-freezing waters of the Arctic. After running into bad weather they go ashore to a small island and accidentally discover a Russian radio outpost. When a Russkie solder finds the men they have to kill or be killed. Before long the Russians are chasing the men by helicopter as they fight for their lives. At times it reminded me of the hopeless feeling the men in Das Boot experienced at the mercy of a stronger enemy. One of the film’s best qualities is the location photography (a lot of which was shot from helicopters) in Svalbard, Norway. Some really amazing scenery in a harsh frozen landscape. The film had a brief theatrical run in the US and then went to home video. The memorable vhs artwork (above) most likely tried to cash in on the success of 1985’s Rambo. But this film is much more of a realistic action thriller instead of comic book escapism. An overlooked winner. In Norwegian language with English subtitles. WIDESCREEN
