Men From the Gutter (1983)

$20.00

(aka An Qu)

DIRECTOR: Ngai Choi Lam (The Cat, Riki-Oh)

STARS: Jason Piao Pai (Heroes Shed No Tears), Jung Wang (Corpse Mania), Meng Lo (Hard-Boiled, Five Deadly Venoms), Michael Kiu Wai Miu (Eastern Condors, Fatal Termination)

SYNOPSIS: Here’s an amazing title you might not be familiar with that should be in every action fan’s collection. A police task force is investigating two cases. One involves three men planning a jewelry heist and the other is a lone assassin seeking revenge on the head of a criminal organization. The film rotates between the characters until they come together in a violent explosion. The jewel thieves are desperate but not unlikable as they get in way above their heads. The assassin is a very unassuming guy who goes solo to kill a LOT of people. He reminded me a little of Phillip Chung-Fung Kwok’s amazing character from Hard Boiled. Lastly we have the two main cops, one going by the book and the other… not so much, who are always one small step behind the criminals. Everything is done pretty straightforward with very little humor or melodrama that some Asian films can fall into. It’s not just the fact that the film has tons of violent action scenes - but the sheer variety of them. Shoot-outs, fistfights, car chases, explosions, burnings, etc. No two action scenes are alike. The camerawork, editing and fearless stunt work are jaw-dropping. This comes from the director of The Cat and Riki-Oh so you’re in good hands! This one is right up there with classic Asian action films like John Woo’s The Killer and Hard-Boiled as well as Ringo Lam’s Full Contact. Highly recommended. WIDESCREEN
