Invitation au Voyage (1982)

$20.00

DIRECTOR: Peter Del Monte (Etoile, Little Flames)

STARS: Laurent Malet (Querelle), Corrine Reynaud, Mario Adorf (Italian Connection, Without Warning), Aurore Clement

SYNOPSIS: Offbeat arthouse road movie from France. The plot kicks off with a young man, “Lucien”, putting a nude woman’s body into a giant double bass case and strapping it to the roof of his car. We learn that the dead woman was Lucien’s twin sister. She was a new wave pop singer and could be difficult at times. But the siblings were very close and occasionally even had sex with each other! Clearly distraught, the man travels to his destination meeting hitchhikers and various characters along the way. One hitchhiker takes a cassette, of his sister’s music, and gets the DJ at a local club to play it so he can dance. A homeless man (Adorf) gets injured by Lucien’s car and he gives him a ride. There are some good surprises along the way including the final sequence. It has a dreamy quality to it and the sister’s music haunts the film as it plays in his car, the nightclub and in videos she made. The actors all do a great job and it’s nice to see Italian film legend Mario Adorf (The Italian Connection, The Tin Drum, Bird with the Crystal Plumage), who’s still making movies(!), turn up as one of the travelers. In French language with English subtitles.
