The Nosy One (Il Ficcanaso) (1981)
DIRECTOR: Bruno Corbucci (Django, Ms Stiletto, Squadra Antiscippo)
STARS: Pippo Franco (Nerone), Edwige Fenech (Taxi Girl, Case of the Bloody iris), Sergio Leonardi, Luc Merenda (Violent Professionals), Sergio Leonardi
SYNOPSIS: Here’s an offbeat title that may well be the first Giallo comedy. Pippo Franco with his Roman nose and odd looks was a regular in the silly comedies that came out of Italy during the 1970’s and early 80s. Here Franco teams up with Django director Bruno Corbucci (no stranger to comedies). Our hero “Luciano” is a nervous wreck who’s scared of his own shadow. One day he starts getting mysterious phone calls from a someone who threatens to kill his friends and co-workers. As the bodies pile up the killer promises that poor Luciano will be his last victim - and he wants him to die of fright. Sexy Edwige Fenech is a good friend and Luciano’s secret crush (despite being married to Luc Merenda) who helps out by playing amateur detective to find the culprit. She also believes in tarot cards, ESP and recognizes Luciano’s (big) nose for sensing real trouble - which is why he’s always so nervous. The finale has Luciano in a factory warehouse as the killer closes in for his final kill. A good mix of silly humor and giallo-style thrills. The comedy is all reality based and avoids going into the WAY over-the-top stuff that some of these Italian films do. Co-star Sergio Leonardi is especially memorable as “Lino”, Luciano’s friend who loves playing elaborate practical jokes. Technically speaking the film is first rate - the camerawork, lighting and editing are all much better than you’d expect. In Italian language with English subtitles. WIDESCREEN
