Godzilla 1985 (1985)
(aka The Return of Godzilla)
DIRECTOR(s): Kôji Hashimoto, R.J. Kizer (Hell Comes to Frogtown), Ishirô Honda (King Kong vs Godzilla)
STARS: Raymond Burr (Rear Window), Keiju Kobayashi, Ken Tanaka, Shin Takuma (Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla)
SYNOPSIS: This Godzilla film fell through the cracks like so much lava on ”Monster Island”. You can get the original Japanese version on dvd and blu-ray. But the U.S. theatrical release with Raymond Burr is only available on vhs in fullscreen format! Amazingly, this film ignores all the Godzilla movies made over the years and is a direct sequel to the 1954 classic which of course had Raymond Burr as “Steve Martin”. The big “G” returns to Tokyo to suck up energy from a nuclear power plant and smash things real good. The military and scientist try various ways to kill him including a new supersonic ship that they invent. There’s also a Russian submarine that gets involved with the drama. The special effects are fun and look great in this widescreen version that Godzilla fans feel is as close to the U.S. theatrical release as possible. The humor in this one is kept to a minimum as it was one reason why they didn’t make any Godzilla films for almost 10 years prior. Writer / director Fred Dekker (Night of the Creeps, Monster Squad) helped write the U.S. version. Dubbed and spoken English. WIDESCREEN
