Fireball Jungle (1968)
DIRECTOR: Joseph G. Prieto (Savages from Hell)
STARS: Alan Mixon, Randy Kirby, Nancy Donohue, John Russell (The Outlaw Josey Wales), Lon Chaney Jr (The Indestructible Man)
SYNOPSIS: A young man, “Steve”, becomes a driver at a sleazy stock car track in Florida. He’s secretly undercover investigating the possible murder of his older brother, who died during a race. Right off the bat he meets a real asshole driver named “Cateye Meares” (top billed Mixon). He’s over-tanned, constantly complaining and always smoking. When Steve does really well on his first race Cateye and his goons beat him bloody, burn him with a cigarette and toss him in a river - all in front of his girlfriend! Not giving up, Steve shakes it off and continues his investigation. Meanwhile, we meet Cateye’s boss, John Russell - another asshole who seems to be involved in organized crime. Lastly, we have Lon Chaney Jr. who owns a junkyard where Cateye and his gang bring stolen cars to be scrapped for parts. Chaney loves throwing back some booze and talking to his dog. All the action revolves around the race track, dive bars and a wild club that has live music, toilet bar seats and a urinal that dispenses beer! Despite its shortcomings I find the film very entertaining. Any drive-in patron would feel they got their money’s worth with: car racing, knife slashings, sex scenes, murder, 60’s pop music, LSD, chases scenes and mean dialog. The fight scenes are all overly sadistic and prolonged. The opening credits title song is pretty memorable too. Recommended. Onscreen title is: Race Against Death
Quality Note: I’ve owned at least 4-5 copies of this film over the years. They would all be best described as “Black & White and Red all over”. This version up for sale isn’t remastered but it does have blue, green, yellow… actual colors in it. Who knew?
Bonus: Includes the original title credit sequence.
