Dragstrip Girl / Motorcycle Gang (1957)

$20.00

DIRECTOR: (both films) Edward L. Cahn (Shake, Rattle and Roll)

STARS: Dragstrip Girl: Fay Spain (Flight to Fury), John Ashley (Attack of the Eye Creatures), Steven Terrell (Invasion of the Saucermen), Frank Gorshin (Beverly Hills Bodysnatchers) / Motorcycle Gang: Anne Neyland (Jailhouse Rock), Steven Terrell (Runaway Daughters), John Ashley (Sudden Death), Carl “Alfalfa” Switzer (The Little Rascals)

SYNOPSIS: Two speed crazed teen films from the 50’s.

Dragstrip Girl: “Louise” (Fay Spain) is a 50’s teenager who loves fast cars and good times. The opening scene shows her drag racing against two strangers (John Ashley and Steve Terrell) down a California street. The trio soon become friends and bond over their love of speed and racing. The two men have a friendly rivalry over who will “get” Louise but it soon turns serious as rich snob Ashley’s jealously gets the better of him. This leads to a drag race finale that could prove fatal. Most of the action takes place on the roads or in a local pizza place owned by two stereotypical Italians. The kids drink milkshakes there and pump coins into the jukebox so they can have wild dance parties. The cops are always harassing them and lecturing about the dangers of drag racing. There’s lots of racing scenes, fights, and a little romance. Frank Gorshin provides comic relief as a very Hunt Hall-type goofy character. Running time: 1hr 10mins

Motorcycle Gang: John Ashley and Steve Terrell are once again rivals, only this time it’s motorcycles that they’re obsessed with. Young “Terry” (Anne Neyland) acts more like a film noir femme fatale than a girl in high school. She spends time with straight-laced Terrell but when bad boy Ashley returns home from a stint in jail, she gets excited. Ashley is a hellraiser and looks down on Terrell and the other kids for joining a ‘police approved‘ biker club. He’s constantly calling Terrell a coward and “yellow” while challenging him to race. During the big motorcycle contest finale Ashley and his pals head into town to terrorize some innocent citizens. There’s lots of great jive talk and slang in this one. John Ashley really chews up the scenery and look for 30 year-old ‘Little Rascal’ Carl “Alfalfa” Switzer as a goofy member of the gang named “Speed”. Classic 50’s drive-in fare. Running time: 1hr 17mins
