SYNOPSIS: This shot-on-video, and straight to vhs horror anthology (ala Creepshow) was well received back in 1990 by icons of the genre like Stephen King, Clive Barker, Forrest J. Ackerman, and Michael Weldon. It’s low budget but some of the episodes have some surprisingly energetic editing. It’s filled with practical effects, gore, blood and digital FX as well. Clips from public domain films and silent movies are utilized. Brinke Stevens appears throughout the segments in both large and small roles.
Dark Romances Vol. 1: Born Evil
“Black Veil”: The longest segment of the set takes place in late 1800’s France. A young woman visits her friend who performs at the infamous ‘Grand Guignol’ theater known for sadistic and bloody live shows. The actress seems to be losing her mind and our heroine tries using hypnosis to help her.
“Listen to Midnight”: A sleazy photographer meets a woman with a dragonfly tattoo and gets more than he bargained for.
Dark Romances Vol. 2: Bleeding Hearts
“She’s Bad, She’s Blonde, She’s Lunch”: In modern day Los Angeles a young Natural Born Killers-style couple rob a comic book store and kill everyone inside. Later they go to ‘Lover’s Lane’ and run into a creepy guy (Repo Man’s Fox Harris) who shares a dark secret with them about his wife.
“Cardinal Sin”: A nerdy young man has an overbearing, and ultra religious, mother. He secretly fantasizes about a woman (porn star Elle Rio) in a men’s magazine who appears to in his dreams.
“Pet Shop of Death”: A man lusts after his flirtatious neighbor (Stevens). After a visit to a weird pet shop he comes up with a plan to deal with his vicious dominatrix-like wife before he can bed down with the girl-next-door.
“Last Love”: A troubled psychiatrist has dreams, visions and even talks with her dead boyfriend.
“What Goes Around”: A struggling pianist meets a sexy blonde (Stevens, again) who is a big art collector. But she doesn’t only collect art pieces — she also collects pieces of the artist.
