Crime Thief (Le Voleur de Crimes) (1969)
DIRECTOR: Nadine Tintignant (Mon Amour Mon Amour)
STARS: Jean Louis Trintignant (The Intruder, Act of Agression), Robert Hossein (The Secret Killer), Florinda Bolkan (Don’t Torture a Duckling), Giorgia Moll (Contempt), Bernadette Lafont
SYNOPSIS: Offbeat drama with Trintignant as an average working man who becomes obsessed with crime after witnessing a young woman commit suicide. He “confesses” to killing the woman by writing to the newspaper. He enjoys the attention he’s getting and continues writing letters and taunting the police. He calls in sick to work and spends most of his days wandering around or hanging out with new friends Hossein and Bolkan. Hossein lets him stay in a spare room (even though Trintignant has a wife, kid and a house!). Eventually he commits some small crimes (stealing a purse and briefly kidnapping a young boy) but his eyes are set on bigger games. It becomes clear that he actually wants to be caught. This is a weird arthouse film with artistic touches, great camerawork and a funky score. Directed by Trintignant’s wife Nadine. In French language with English subtitles. WIDESCREEN
