DIRECTOR: Gerry Lively (Darkness Falls)
STARS: Kirk Rivera, Steve Messina, Lindsley Allen (Showgirls),
SYNOPSIS: In the late 80’s and early 90’s there were numerous Dirty Dancing rip-offs like Lambada, Heavenly Bodies, The Forbidden Dance, Pulsebeat, Salsa, etc. Here’s a more obscure one from Italian filmmakers including Joe D’Amato, of Buried Alive fame, executive producing and Black Emanuelle star Laura Gemser doing the costume design! It takes place in New Orleans as two groups of 20-year old dancers have an ongoing rivalry. Most of their battles involve the groups pranking each other. Pretty harmless stuff. But then… the "biggest contest of the year” comes up and both groups want to win. It’s the “Hot Steps” contest where teams get to strut their stuff for the top prize. Our heroes are the blue collar team with “Rico” as their leader. The opposing team is the rich kids led by “Kevin”. Making things more complicated is sexy newcomer “Mayra” who is tall, athletic, and clearly the best dancer. The problem is that both Rico and Kevin want her on their team and in bed. It all ends with a big dance-off to see who has the hottest steps. As you might suspect this has a very late 1980’s vibe with it’s hairstyles, outfits, cars and music. There’s corny melodrama and lots of dancing sequences which combines Dirty Dancing moves with breakdancing. One funny observation is that the two guys leading the rich kids team are clearly interested in each other and not any girls in the films.
