SYNOPSIS: Two action-packed Filipino rarities

Bionic Boy: A young boy named “Sonny” is traveling in a car with his parents (his father is a top government agent) when the henchmen of the main villain catch up. They crush the car with a heavy tractor, leaving his mother dead and his father at death’s door. Sunny has life-threatening injuries throughout his body (legs, arms, ears, eyes, etc). The doctors and scientists feel he’s a lost cause but a bionics expert thinks he can be rebuilt ala The Bionic Man. In no time our boy hero is running and jumping around. He’s adopted by his father’s good friend and an assassination attempt is made on that man as well. Eventually our heroes put together all the pieces and locate the villain’s island fortress which is like something from a “James Bond” film. It’s surrounded by mines and electrified fencing in the water. Not to mention dozens of machine gun toting thugs. Sonny manages to get on the island and kill dozens of men. At one point he’s captured and forced to fight for the villain’s amusement. With a little help from the police Sonny fights the bad guys using his super hearing, vision and strength. The last 30 minutes of the film is pure action: hand-to-hand combat, weapons, gun fights, copters and explosions. Every time Sunny uses his bionic powers there’s a musical cue much like they did on The Six Million Dollar Man. This plot is a “can’t miss” idea and must have been popular with kids in the Philippines circa 1977. Recommended. Dubbed in English. WIDESCREEN

Dynamite Johnson (aka Return of the Bionic Boy, aka Bionic Boy 2): Our boy wonder “Sonny” (aka Johnson Sonny Lee) returns in this action-packed sequel. This time around the villain seems to be an ex-Nazi, “Heinrich Kuntz"“, with a heavy German accent and eye patch. He’s taken control of an old mining camp and has plans to rule the world using some recently acquired plutonium. The first target with be Hong Kong and then… the world. Kuntz also has a giant military tank designed to look like a dragon(!), including a flamethrower in the mouth, to scare off a nearby tribe. When Sonny stumbles onto the bad guys’ plot he goes into James Bond / John Wick mode. The co-star in this film is Marrie Lee who starred in two “Cleopatra Wong” films (Cleopatra Wong - 1978 and Devils Three - 1979). Dynamite Johnson falls between the other two films but she’s still playing Cleopatra Wong, although Sonny calls her “Auntie Cleo”. Sonny and Cleopatra trade off action scenes in this film that serves as a sequel for both characters. Fight scenes, explosions and lots of bionic action throughout the film and the last 30 minutes is packed with it. Dubbed in English. WIDESCREEN
