A Name for Evil (1973)
DIRECTOR: Bernard Girard (Dead Heat on a Merry-Go-Round)
STARS: Robert Culp (I Spy, The Night the City Screamed), Samantha Eggar (The Brood), Mike Lane (Valley of the Dragons, Zebra Force), Sheila Sullivan (Hickey & Boggs)
SYNOPSIS: This movie has a bit of a rough reputation. I’m not saying it’s classic… but if you go in expecting a “Horror” movie you’ll be disappointed. This is more of a supernatural character study of a man who is losing his grasp on reality (think Repulsion or Jacob’s Ladder, for example). Robert Culp stars as an architect in a stagnant marriage to Samantha Eggar. He inherits a huge house from his grandfather that’s located next to lake in a completely remote wilderness. There are some townspeople in the area but not too many. He and Eggar take time off in hopes of fixing the house up. The place is a mess but they find a caretaker and hire some workers to help out. The caretaker still refers to Culp’s dead grandfather as “The General” as if he were still alive and we occasionally catch a glimpse of his ghost(?) on the grounds. Culp keeps seeing and hearing things that aren’t really there. One night he wanders into a pub with the locals drinking, dancing, and singing. Before long everyone gets naked, including Culp, and they run off into the woods. Culp screws a blonde girl (his real life wife at the time) and they spend the night in the woods. A few days later they meet up again and screw by a waterfall. Soon after, he confronts Eggar and his demons. The ending is pretty dark to this dreamy, sometimes trippy, film. The “Paragon” vhs release runs 1hr 14mins. The version for sale on our site is the 1hr 20min Canadian vhs release (from “Penthouse Pictures”). The extra footage is the big party / orgy sequence which includes full frontal nudity from all involved including Culp. Uncut version.
