A Degree of Murder (1967)

$20.00

(aka Mord und Totschlag)

DIRECTOR: Volker Schlöndorff (The Tin Drum)

STARS: Anita Pallenberg (Performance), Werner Enke, Hans Peter Hallwachs

SYNOPSIS: Despite the title and poster art - this film is really more of a character study than a thriller. Sexy Anita Pallenberg stars as “Marie“ a young girl living in an Munich apartment with her boyfriend. Early in the film he’s seen packing his belongings and moving out. Even though they officially broke up he wants one last screw and begins groping her. She fights him off and grabs a pistol to “scare” him but ends up killing him instead. The main thrust of the plot is the goal of getting the body out of the building and disposed of. Marie wanders into a local bar and finds a potential partner in crime - a young man drinking alone. She offers him money to help with her little “problem”. Surprisingly, he agrees and they set about getting a car as well as finding a second man to help carry the corpse. The three go on a late 60s road trip to the country before completing their grim task. Leisurely paced and Euro artsy it’s more about the trip and not the destination. Visually it reminded me of later German New Wave films like The American Friend and Fox and His Friends. Pallenberg’s boyfriend at the time, Rolling Stones’ Brian Jones, provides some of the soundtrack music. In German language with English subtitles. WIDESCREEN
