SYNOPSIS: Miriam Hopkins and Lana Turner give two late career performances in these "hag horror" films. Fans of "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?", "The Big Cube", "The Naked Zoo" will enjoy this double feature.

Savage Intruder: "Sunset Boulevard" meets the pre-slasher boom of the 80's in this forgotten horror. 1930's star Miriam Hopkins (1931's Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde, The Heiress) gives her farewell performance alongside the real-life son of John Garfield! Hopkins plays an aging Norma Desmond-ish star living out her last days in a fancy house tended to by her faithful servant (Gale Sondergaard). This film isn't a mystery or who-dun-it - we know from the start that David Garfield is a serial killer with a taste for elderly female victims. He shoots up, sweats and has freaky flashbacks / hallucinations (see clip below) that have a bit of a giallo flavor to them. He talks his way into a job caring for a wheelchair bound Hopkins. The other house staff distrust Garfield and see through his attempts at getting close to his septuagenarian boss. Before long the bodies, and body parts, start piling up. Much like "Dear Dead Delilah" this one has some unexpectedly gory moments: hands & heads are hacked off and the blood flows pretty easily (and this was only 1970, or '69, depending on your source). A guilty pleasure that's better than you might think (and certainly better than the cheesy 80's vhs sleeve art).

Persecution: This "hag horror" entry has a 52 year old Lana Turner in a (modern) British Gothic story. She plays an overbearing mother with a fondness for cats. The aka for this film was both Sheba and Terror of Sheba which is her preferred name for a feline companion. Her wimpy son, David (Ralph Bates), kills one of her cats early in the film and then returns 24 years later with his wife and baby. This mommy dearest doesn't hold back on her hatred and disgust of him. Dead bodies start turning up and eventually David and his mother must face each other. Almost devoid of blood or nudity but a creepy old house and a graveyard full of dead cats add to the atmosphere. Trevor Howard only appears in a few scenes. A well acted and fairly grim psychological horror entry with it's share of fans.

Note: The onscreen title for Persecution is "The Graveyard"

NOTE: This is a special Two Disc set priced at $30.00
