STRANGERS IN PARADISE dvd

(1984)

DIRECTOR: Ulli Lommel (Boogey Man, Overkill)

STARS: Ulli Lommel, Ken Letner, Thom Jones, Cliff Brisbois

SYNOPSIS: After a meeting with Hitler in 1939 a mesmerist, Jonathan Sage (Lommel), has his body frozen so he can avoid WWII. He's thawed out in the 1980's by a group of do-gooder suburbanites who want to wipe out rock-n-roll, drugs, homosexuals and punk teens. The neighborhood they live in looks like the picture perfect one from Edward Scissorhands. The punk teens remind me of the cartoony ones from films like Terrorvision, Punk Vacation, New Wave Hookers, etc. In a hidden bomb shelter under the neighborhood is a lab filled with computers and scientists. It's here they try to brainwash the bad elements of society into upstanding citizens. At first Sage goes along with their plans but eventually sees the error of his ways. As if that weren't enough the film is also a full blown musical with dance numbers! I went into this one thinking it would be so-bad-it's-good like Voyage of the Rock Aliens. But honestly… it's entertaining. It's a weird plot with a lot of characters and locations (for a low budget film) and the music is fun too. There's a variety of rip-off song styles including: Devo, Kim Wilde, 10cc, The Doors and more. Fans of Rocky Horror Show, Repo Man and The Apple might want to check this out. Better than you might expect.
