SALVATION! dvd
(1987)
DIRECTOR: Beth B (Two Small Bodies)
STARS: Stephen McHattie (Death Valley), Viggo Mortensen (Lord of the Rings), Exene Cervenka, Dominique Davalos (Howard the Duck), Rockets Redglare (Trees Lounge)
SYNOPSIS: This is a very offbeat, unpredictable comedy about televangelism, kidnapping and greed. The great Stephen McHattie stars as a mildly racist, misogynistic, hate spewing televangelist. He's worshipped by Cervenka who's married to crude blue collar drunk Viggo Mortensen (the two were married in real life before the film's premiere). McHattie's program is always playing on their TV and Cervenka feels that she could contribute to it and make it even better. They hatch a crazy plan to invade McHattie's life and force him to add Cervenka to his show! After a bit of sex, violence and intimidation McHattie surprisingly agrees… and the ratings go up. But infighting and greed come with their newfound success. McHattie steals the show with a bravura performance. Viggo is convincing in an early co-starring role that was a good 18 years away from when he would put a bullet in McHattie's head at the beginning of Cronenberg's A History of Violence. The real surprise is punk icon Cervenka (of the band "X") who disappears into the role of the religiously manic housewife with a dream. Look fast for Michael Anderson (Twin Peaks' "Man from Another Place") in a music video / fantasy sequence as "The Devil". A real weird and funny one.
