THE SPIDER'S STRATAGEM
(aka Strategia del Ragno)
(1970)
DIRECTOR: Bernardo Bertolucci (The Conformist, Last Tango in Paris)
STARS: Giulio Brogi, Alida Valli, Pippo Campanini
SYNOPSIS: This was made the same year as Bertolucci's The Conformist. Like that masterpiece it has cinematography by Vittorio Storaro and is gorgeous to look at in ways only he and Bertolucci can conjure. It concerns a young man called to his hometown by his father's lover. His father was a hero killed many years earlier. A respected rebel against the rise of fascism in 1930's Italy. The man arrives and sees a statue of his father which watches over the small countryside village. The rest of the film has him talking with various characters who tell him what his father meant to them and what he was like. The son also feels his father's killer may still live in the town. It's hard to get all the plot points in on this one with a capsule review. Needless to say cinephiles are up in arms that his one has never been released on dvd! In Italian with English subtitles.
