MIDNITE SPARES dvd
(aka Car Crash)
(1983)
DIRECTOR: Quentin Masters (Thumb Tripping)
STARS: James Laurie, Max Cullen, Bruce Spence (The Road Warrior, OZ), Gia Carides, David Argue (Razorback, Backlash)
SYNOPSIS: A young race car driver returns to his hometown in Australia looking for his father. He meets up with his father's business partner who runs a car repair shop. He learns that a ring of car thieves, a chop shop and some crooked cops may be behind his father's disappearance. He does find time to win some races and bed down a local girl too. Road Warrior's Bruce Spence and Razorback's David Argue almost steal the show as two tow truck operators who are perpetually covered in car grease, eating fast food and ogling at sexy women. They also help out in the pit crew during races. It all ends in a crash of metal and mayhem when the villains are revealed and the chop shop destroyed. Filled with a great cast of Australian faces and characters. This is a well-made film with more drama and realistic laughs than the 'Animal House on wheels' that the poster implies. Similar to character driven films that Jonathan Demme made years ago (like Citizen's Band).
