SYNOPSIS: Director Oldrich Lipsky deserves to be better know outside of his native country of Czechoslovakia. For over three decades he made wildly entertaining comedies that often played with genre themes like sci-fi, horror and fantasy. This one reminds me of the films of Terry Gilliam (Time Bandits) and Jean-Pierre Juenet (Children of the Lost City). I'd be surprised if both filmmakers hadn't seen Lipsky's work at some point. This tale takes place in 1897 as we follow our hero The Count, a pampered Opera singer, on vacation in a secluded mountain village as he mourns the loss of his bride-to-be "Salsa Verde" (a famed singer in her own right). Through a series of events he discovers that his fiancé is still alive and kept prisoner in a mysterious castle. He and a dimwitted accomplice manage to enter the trap filled fortress and meet the long-bearded eccentric Baron who is obsessed with opera music. He employs a crazy, but brilliant, scientist who wears an eyepatch and has a stump hand that can wield tools and weapons alike and a bald henchman who does all of his dirty work. The Count must battle this trio with his half-wits and dumb luck to find his lost love. Despite the fact this story takes place at the end of the 1800's the scientist has invented television, a quadrophonograph, moving pictures, a spy camera and rocket ships! This film is a lot of fun with some jokes hitting an almost Mel Brooks-like level of silliness. Recommended. In spoken Czech language with English subtitles.
