THE RUNESTONE dvd
(1991)
DIRECTOR: Willard Carroll
STARS: Peter Riegert (Animal House), Joan Severance, Mitchell Laurance, William Hickey (Puppet Master), Tim Ryan, Alexandar Godunov (Die Hard), Lawrence Tierney (Reservoirs Dogs, Abduction), Chris Young (Max Headroom)
SYNOPSIS: A sleazy rich creep discovers an ancient runestone and has it installed in his high rise New York apartment. When he lusts after his ex-girlfriend (Severance) the runestone transforms him into a vengeful monster. While the creature leaves a long trail of bodies in its wake, Severance, her husband and wise-guy cop Riegert try to kill it. Die Hard's Godunov plays the "Clockmaker," a mystical figure, who really only shows up at the end to help with the action packed finale. The monster is really cool and more comic-book like in appearance than it is flat out scary. It's a cross between Creepshow's "Crate" beast, The Predator and Rawhead Rex but I give the filmmakers credit for not holding back on showing the furry villain. There are plenty of brightly lit shots as the monster beats, scratches and pummels an endless supply of supporting characters (mostly cops). The score by David Newman is a great bombastic example of late 80's / early 90's films. It will remind you of every popcorn action film of that time period (Lethal Weapon, Die Hard, Ghostbusters, etc). There are a few scenes that take place inside NYC's "Palace Theater". A year before planning the heist in Reservoir Dogs screen legend Lawrence Tierney appeared here as Riegert's skeptical police chief. A fun overlooked winner. This was transferred from laserdisc and the stereo soundtrack sounds fantastic. WIDESCREEN
