SYNOPSIS: Jack Palance rides the thin blue line first as a cop then as a killer in these two underrated films.
One Man Jury: Jack Palance stars as a "Dirty Harry" style cop in Los Angeles trying to catch a serial killer who rapes his victims after they're dead. When the film opens the killer has already racked up a body count. In a mild spoiler alert sexy Angel Tompkins is tasked in the Janet Leigh / Psycho position and gets knocked off early in the film. Palance makes a truce with mob boss Joe Spinell to help catch the creep know as 'The Slasher'. It's a decision he'll later regret. Chris Mitchum is Palance's partner and, sometimes, moral compass. There are plenty of shoot-outs, a car chase, nudity and a pretty good foot chase across some rooftops. Keep your eyes peeled for appearances by Royal Dano, Frank Pesce and Mike Mazurki. Plus you'll see a young Tony Sirico (The Soprano's "Paulie Walnuts") as one of Spinell's goons named… "Charlie Nuts".
Portrait of a Hitman: This one is a character study of a professional hitman but it's still packed with lots gunplay and shoot-outs. Palance is a reliable gun-for-hire who always gets the job done. In his free time he creates large paintings and his boss / handler Rod Steiger is one of his biggest supporters. However, Palance has a huge moral dilemma when his next contract is to kill neurosurgeon Bo Svenson. The problem is that Svenson once saved Palance's life and they've been friends ever since. They love racing their sports cars down winding mountain roads or just throwing back a few drinks. Palance decides not to kill his pal and instead starts looking into who wants him dead and why. This leads to a colorful but dangerous crime boss, played by Richard Roundtree, sporting an African accent in a memorable performance, and his crew of killers. This film moves along pretty quickly with the aforementioned shootings and car scenes keeping things lively. All the actors are fine with Rod Steiger almost stealing the show and chewing up the scenery even more than Palance!
