LOS OLVIDADOS dvd
(aka The Young and the Damned)
(1950)
DIRECTOR: Luis Buñuel (Un Chien Andalou, Belle de Jour)
STARS: Estela Inda, Miguel Incian, Alfonso Mejia, Roberto Cobo
SYNOPSIS: Buñuel's most famous, and infamous, film. Juvenile delinquents run wild in Mexico in this shocking film from 1950. The film takes place after WWII in a grim Mexico slum town. A troubled boy returns home after a stint in juvenile detention. He's looking for some revenge and soon reconnects with his old partners in crime. There are numerous characters that populate the poverty stricken town: an old blind man, a young not-so-innocent girl, a good-hearted boy; thieves, killers, pedophiles, beggars and drunks. Buñuel goes easy on his surrealism and switches it up for more Neo-Realism instead. It is unrelenting, unsympathetic and gritty. In league with Bicycle Thieves, Pixote and City of God to name a few. Despite the awards and accolades this film has never received a release on dvd in the United States… hard to believe! In the original Spanish language with English subtitles. The black & white print we're selling is nice and sharp.
