GRENDEL GRENDEL GRENDEL
dvd

(1981)

DIRECTOR: Alexander Stitt

STARS: (Voices) Peter Ustinov (Viva Max), Keith Michell, Arthur Dignam

SYNOPSIS: Animated film that looks at the story of Beowulf from the viewpoint of Grendel the monster. Peter Ustinov has fun voicing the big, green, spotted monster or yore. We see him interacting with his, mostly unseen, terror of a mother, as well as a large red dragon who gives some sage advice. Otherwise we hear his inner thoughts about life and his place in it as he happily chomps on any humans that he encounters. Meanwhile, a king gathers his minions and they soon build a castle and a kingdom. Grendel mostly steers clear of trouble but the humans turn his exploits into an evil legend that must be destroyed. The "hero" Beowulf doesn't show up until the last 10 minutes and is presented as a bit of a sociopath. The animation is fun and very (late) 70's looking. The character voices, with Australian and British accents, are all very lower class and casual in a Monty Python kind of way. A fun film.
