SYNOPSIS: Two forgotten Gary Coleman comedies.
Jimmy the Kid: Harmless 1980's caper comedy with a jam-packed cast of adults acting stupid around smarty pants rich kid Gary Coleman. Bored tyke "Jimmy" (Coleman) gets kidnapped by a crew of Disney-style bad guys (ala The Apple Dumpling Gang). The brains of the operation is Paul Le Mat who is constantly stymied by big lunk Olkewicz with help from Ruth Gordon and Dee Wallace. Jimmy's dad (Cleavon Little) is a famous musician with tons of money and he hires bumbling detective Don Adams to find his son. Ironically because Jimmy is smarter than the criminals (and not scared) he actually grows to like the adventure of being kidnapped. going so far as to give the crooks some suggestions to improve their criminal endeavors. Poor Pat Morita gets the worst cliche treatment as his character isn't only severely short-sighted and an awful driver but also performs slapstick kung fu. It starts off bit slow but the last 30 minutes has some zing with all the characters chasing each other around to a satisfying twist ending. Based on a book by legendary crime novelist Donald Westlake (Point Blank, The Hot Rock, The Grifters, etc)!
The Kid with the 200 IQ: 13-year old genius Gary Coleman tries to adjust to college life as the youngest man on campus in this made-for-TV comedy / drama. He stars as "Nick" a smart, overeager brown-noser. First up he meets his (surprisingly understanding) roommate "Steve" who acts as a big brother to little Gary. But he can hardly wait to be introduced to his idol, "Professor Mills" (Guillaume). He's the hotshot astronomy teacher (sort of cross between Carl Sagen and Neil DeGrasse). Gary has some success with making friends as people are fascinated by his story. But he also faces challenges with things like older girls and everyone going to a "beer bar" (as Gary calls it) where he can't get in. Worst of all his hero Professor Mills is a bit of a ballbuster and gives Gary a hard time. Eventually things work out and the Prof realizes he was not being fair. Genre fave Mel Stewart plays the college janitor who plays sort of a Jiminy Cricket to Coleman's Pinocchio. A solid 80's comedy mixed with some drama and pathos. Don't miss out on the film's final scene where Gary has a quick interaction with a young, 19 year old, Crispin Glover!
