THE BLUE KNIGHT

(1975)

DIRECTOR: J. Lee Thompson (Cape Fear, 10 to Midnight)

STARS: George Kennedy (Mean Dog Blues), Alex Rocco, Glynn Turman (J.D.'s Revenge, The Wire), Verna Bloom

SYNOPSIS: Somewhat lighter take on The Blue Knight character than the 1973 film with William Holden. This feature length TV pilot has George Kennedy perfectly cast as, tough but fair, Bumper Morgan. He's been on the police force many years but still walks the neighborhood beat in downtown Los Angeles. A fellow police officer is shot in a pawn store robbery. The department chalks it up as a simple homicide. But Bumper investigates deeper and finds a plot involving weapons and a revolutionary. Everything looks shot on location: the run down police station, bars, derelict buildings and of the course the dirty streets of downtown L.A. (circa 1975). A stellar cast of supporting characters including Alex Rocco, Verna Bloom and the great Glynn Turman. More heart than the usual cop action show of that era. Based on a novel by Joseph Wambaugh. Music by Henry Mancini. Never released on dvd.
