SHELF LIFE (1993)
DIRECTOR: Paul Bartel ( DEATH RACE
2000, EATING RAOUL )
STARS: O-Lan Jones, Andrea Stein,
Jim Turner
SYNOPSIS: After a long and varied career in
film this was Paul Bartel’s last directing job before his death.
It’s a great, weird flick that never really saw the light of day.
(Much like it’s main characters). In the early 60’s a suburban Mom
& Dad freak out after seeing JFK shot on TV. They grab their
three kids and retreat to their fallout shelter sure of an oncoming
war. Well, flash-forward to 30 years later and the parents are long
dead but the kiddies have grown up physically (but not necessarily
mentally). They play strange games based on their memories of
childhood, television and various leftovers of culture (comic books,
the bible) that were stored in the shelter. Based on a play by the
three lead actors. The action all takes place in the claustrophobic
bunker. A real one-of-a-kind oddity.
